Warriors,

2001 Is coming to a close and as I think back I realize what a sweet and sour year it's been.

On one hand our success in fighting for the right to responsibly enjoy the forest was won, and on the other hand the fight to protect the freedom of our country has just begun.

One thing that stands steady and unites us as Americans is our love and willingness to defend our freedom.  It is this quality that has sustained us and has turned us into a beacon of hope to all those who yearn for freedom.

This quality, this American spirit, defended our freedom to responsibly enjoy the forest.  It will also defeat those who attacked our country and the freedom it represents.

No matter what happens, I thank God that I am an American.  It is my hope that America, and our freedom, will continue to be the beacon of hope to all those who yearn for it.

2001 Toad Festival

By Chris Vargas

Many thanks to all who participated in the Toad Festival.  We had great weather and no major problems during the event, both of which I wish I could guarantee at all our events. Tam "Speaks for Warriors" Pham, our club programmer, has posted quite a few of the pictures he took on his web site at www.singlespeed.net/toads.htm .

As you can tell from his site, he, along with several other Warriors Society members, belong to that sick group known as single speeders.  I have several other pictures from the event in this issue of Smoke Signals.

In a repeat of last year, Johnny O'Mara was the first back to camp.  The first single speeder back was Warrior's Society member Andy "Fast on Slow Horse" Lightle.  He was only one rider back from Johnny.  Of course there's no prize for being first; all you get are bragging rights.

Jane Wilkomm had the highest score from the games, 79 points.  She won first pick of the prizes and chose a Kona mountain bike.  Jane is a leader of the Trail Angels, a female riding club, and a big supporter of the Warrior's Society.   She's a great person and we are so happy she was fortunate enough to score such high points.

We had a lot of notable guests at the Toad Festival, including Chuck Anderson, a mountain bike advocacy leader in Santa Barbara, IMBA representative and Warrior's Society nominee, as well as Daniel Greenstadt, a mountain bike advocacy leader in San Diego and IMBA representative.  Daniel was also very fortunate at the Toad; he won a Wild Hare full-suspension bike frame courtesy of Psycle Werks, one of our major sponsors. Dan is a great guy and has donated so much of his time to keeping trails maintained and open to mountain bikers.  We are very happy for him.

We had a ton of prizes to give out, and we are very thankful to all our sponsors who have supported us in 2001.  Please support our sponsors, listed on our opening web page, for sponsoring our trail work and riding events.

This event and all our events would not be possible if not for the work of all the support volunteers.  Orange County Search and Rescue did an outstanding job as always watching out for you, as did all our aid station and communications staffers.
