We had a great turnout at the first cross-country trail building day! We
had a turnout of 29 volunteers who ranged in age from 4 to 72. The weather
cooperated too; it was a beautiful day out at the ranch, with temps in
the 70's; a perfect day to be building a trail.
The trail we would be building would be a short bypass trail with 3
switchbacks traversing down from one fire road to another. The hardest
part of building the trail was the first section because of the
steepness of the terrain. Creating a trail bed in this first section
took the longest time and plenty of mattock swinging to accomplish, but
after about 3 hours this section was complete.
While many volunteers worked on this first section of trail and the
switchback for the first turn, other volunteers concentrated on the rest
of the trail, which was much easier to build because this section of the
slope was not as steep as the first section requiring less work to build
the trail bed.
The second section of trail was the most favorite section to build.
Trail designers Eron Boyer and Jason Martin took this section under and
around an oak wrapping the trail along the base of the tree. From here
the trail continued to the third and fourth sections of the trail ending
at the fire road below.
After the work was over it was time to eat pizza, and for some who
brought their bikes, a chance to ride the new trail.
Eron and Jason, with the approval of the volunteers, agreed to name the
trail "Scorpion" because of all the scorpions we came upon while
building it. We still have three other single tracks to build but with
Christmas and New Years coming up we will probably postpone the work on
the second single track until the second week in January.
Many thanks to all who helped out!
